This project examines the sitters in the National Gallery’s Portrait of Smithsonian from a gender perspective, exploring how they are remembered in the gallery. It focuses on tags describing their roles and realms, comparing the representation of men and women by the topic tag in photos description.
The visual design uses square frames inspired by portrait layouts. A treemap chart represents the proportion of careers by gender, with hover functionality to compare them directly. A timeline histogram highlights trends over decades, allowing users to explore topics and track progress over time. Additionally, it features links to sitter photos for more details, connecting directly to the Smithsonian’s site.
