TK Park, the client, approached our studio with data from their library and requested us to create a data story about reading culture in Thailand in order to promote reading. After brainstorming topics with the team, the data storyteller wrote content to explore the diversity, prices, and publishers of Thai books that impact readers. The story highlights the challenge of accessing a variety of books, the high prices relative to people's income, and the size of publishers. The project also includes policy recommendations based on expert interviews to address this issue.
In terms of design, the client already has their own corporate identity for colors and fonts, so I adapted the visuals accordingly. I aimed to create a modern library atmosphere that aligns with their identity, with a sleek and clean look, and added gradients as a subtle touch resembling a book, keeping in mind ease of implementation for the developer. For the data section, which contains a list of over 80,000 books, we had a data analyst assist us, and I used Google Sheets to create most of the bar charts, manually shaping them to resemble books. In addition, users have the option to select books they are interested in, allowing them to compare the selected data within the story.
This project also includes an infographic version for social media promotion, which will be released before the website launch by the end of this year. I hope this project achieves its primary goal, although it is a lengthy read designed to inspire and encourage more reading among our audience.
